During last Sunday’s field biology collecting trip at the intersection of First and Windsor in Champaign I had opportunity to photograph the spittle bug shown above. As I focused I noticed the aphid pictured below.
Watching the birth of an aphid through a macro lens is pretty fascinating.
You just never know what you’ll encounter during a field photo session…

What type equipment did you use to get this photo? I forgot to ask you at BugShot 2011 exactly what type of equipment you used. Thanks.
I use a Nikon D3100 (though most of my pictures were taken with my old D50) with a 60mm Nikkor macro lens and a 12 mm Kenko auto focusing extension tube. No external flash unit. Light weight and pretty bare bones, but it does the job most of the time.
