Vinnie, the classroom giant vinegaroon (Mastigoproctus giganteus), is looking pretty swollen. I suspect a molt is imminent. Double click image for a larger than life-size view of Vinnie.
Vinnie has proven to be extraordinarily easy to care for, is readily handleable, and great for demonstrations.
More details regarding the species can be found in an earlier post entitled “Giant whip scorpion, a.k.a. vinegaroon (Mastigoproctus giganteus).”
A much larger, leaner, wild vinegaroon is pictured in an earlier blog entry entitled “Vinegaroons (aka whip scorpions, uropygids).”
How big is this guy or gal?
He’s still a little guy. Body, exclusive of appendages (which add a great deal of length) is slightly over an inch and a half long.
He’s certainly growing more slowly than the spiders!
