An interesting paper was brought up on the entomology list-serv this morning. The 18 authors of the paper, Iridovirus and Microsporidian Linked to Honey Bee Colony Decline, propose that it is the presence of a particular virus in combination with the presence of a particular protist that have led to the observed worldwide decline in honeybees seen over the past few years.
The idea that a combination of factors is responsible for the observed declines (particularly in the U.S., Europe and Asia) certainly isn’t new, but the data is. It will be interesting to see how these findings are received by the international community throughout the next few weeks.
