Silverfish are one of many arthropod species being monitoring in a University of Illinois Library systemwide IPM initiative.
Sticky traps, placed in each corner of each of the school library’s four rooms, are monitored and replaced monthy. Each trap is placed in pest runways – along baseboards or window edges. The number and spacing of the traps is decided based on the square footage of the library and the risk of infestation. We monitor about 14 traps each month.
Arthropod identification is accomplished by referencing the Photo Reference worksheet on a tracking Excel spreadsheet. Each trap is assessed by me and one of my Field Biology students.
Two months into the program, we are finding low infestation levels of virtually all arthropod species other than booklice.
