Snowy tree crickets are sometimes referred to as thermometer crickets because their chirp is directly correlated to the temperature. Count the number of chirps in thirteen seconds, add 40, and you have the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit.

BTW, I really enjoyed Saturday night’s Prairie Rivers Networks’ ”Katydids and Crickets: An Evening Walk in the Woods with Orthoptera Experts,” led by David Eades and Sam Heads, entomologists at the University of Illinois Natural History Survey. Thanks to everyone in the organization, as well as the workshop leaders, for a very enjoyable evening!
