These solid, stocky broad-bodied grasshoppers are described as “pebble-like” by BugGuide (http://bugguide.net/node/view/106109). Color ranges from pale whitish to tan and gray, with scattered darker spots or mottling.
These exceptionally well camouflaged grasshoppers are frequently found along gravel roadsides. They tend to crawl/hop short distances and are easily captured (and photographed!).
Diet remains uncertain, though it is assumed to be entirely vegetation-based.
